I command all prelates, masters, priors of orders, counts, grandees, commanders, sub commanders, knights, esquires, and members of my council and auditors of my chamber, alcaides and baillifs of my court, and all counselors, alcaldes, baillifs, judges, prestameros, provosts, commanders of castles and of fortified and unfortified palaces, and other justices, officers and magistrates whomsoever of the most noble city of Seville and all the other cities, towns and places of our kingdoms and dominions, and captains of the sea, masters, boatswains, barge men and masters of shils and galleys, and my superintendent of the fleet, and sailors, merchants, and all seamen, rivermen, fishermen and boatmen who navigate sea and river, and all others who go in my fleet and out of it in whatsoever manner, or in whatsoever ships they may go, and all and other persons of whatever state, and condition, pre-eminence or dignity they may be, to whom what is written below appertains or may appertain, or to whom this my patent of privilege may be shown, that you and they do hold and receive the said Don Christopher Colombus, as our high Admiral of the Ocean and our Viceroy and Governor of the mainland and islands, which by his activity and industry shall by discovered or acquired in the said Oceans during his lifetime, and likewise, after his death, his heirs and successors one after another in perpetuity.

On Christopher Colombus, our Admiral, Viceroy and Governor of the Ocean. Τhe things, which in our opinion, must and ought to be done and performed, with the help of God our Lord, for the settlement of the islands and mainland discovered and placed under our dominion, and of those who remain to be discovered in the region of the Indies in the Ocean, are the following.
That as soon as you arrive, God Willing, in the said Indies, you are to strive with the utmost diligence to serve us and to remain lovingly under our dominion and subjection; and to encourage and induce the natives of the said Indies to all peace and quietness, and chiefly that they may be converted to our Holy Catholic Faith and the Holy Sacraments may be administered by the friars and priests who are and will be there, in such a manner that God our Lord may be served, and their consciences may be assured. I the King, I the Queen.
