Τhe things, which in our opinion, must and ought to be done and performed, with the help of God our Lord, for the settlement of the islands and mainland discovered and placed under our dominion, and of those who remain to be discovered in the region of the Indies in the Ocean, are the following.

That as soon as you arrive, God Willing, in the said Indies, you are to strive with the utmost diligence to serve us and to remain lovingly under our dominion and subjection; and to encourage and induce the natives of the said Indies to all peace and quietness, and chiefly that they may be converted to our Holy Catholic Faith and the Holy Sacraments may be administered by the friars and priests who are and will be there, in such a manner that God our Lord may be served, and their consciences may be assured. I the King, I the Queen.
